Moving a parent into assisted living involves logistics, emotions, and dozens of small details. This checklist covers the 4–6 weeks before move-in through the first month of adjustment.
4–6 Weeks Before
- Complete care assessment at chosen community
- Review and sign contract with elder law review if needed
- Begin downsizing — focus on meaningful items first
- Update power of attorney and healthcare proxy
- Notify current doctors and transfer records
Move-In Week
- Label all clothing and personal items
- Set up pharmacy delivery to the community
- Bring familiar photos, bedding, and comfort items
- Introduce yourself to key staff on the floor
- Plan your first week visit schedule
First Month
Expect an adjustment period of 2–6 weeks. Visit consistently but don't hover. Attend a family care conference. Report concerns early. Most residents settle once routines are established.
